Ritengo che 1984 sia una capolavoro, infatti con la sua opera Orwell ci fa capire come la società in cui viviamo possa condizionare non solamente la nostra vita materiale ma come possa sconvolgerci nel profondo di noi stessi fino a farci dubitare della realtà stessa. Con la sua opera Orwell estremizza i totalitarismi i quali tipicamente tendono a divinizzare i propri leader, ma in questo caso lo scopo della dittatura del grande fratello, è il raggiungimento del potere come fine supremo e non come mezzo per acquisire la "libertà" di dominare, diventando egli stesso schiavo del meccanismo che ha creato che non permette all'uomo di raggiungere il suo vero fine, coltivare la propria umanità.

Una altro aspetto che sottolinea Orwell è la limitazione della capacità di pensiero ottenuta tramite una lingua in cui non è possibile più esprimere il proprio pensiero. Se l'uomo non ha la capacità di identificare in maniera razionale il motivo della sua sofferenza, poiché non ha parole per esprimerlo, allora non può neanche definire la causa della propria sofferenza. Tutto quel che rimane è soltanto un rancore indefinito, che può essere spazzato via attraverso le sedute di "odio collettivo.

Il partito Orwelliano è infallibile e onnisciente poiché egli modifica il passato in modo da farlo apparire uguale al presente. Questa è una prassi comune a tutte le dittature: i mezzi di comunicazione e apprendimento vengono alterati a seconda di ciò che conviene alla classe dominante. Il revisionismo ci fa capire come il governo possa influenzare il nostro modo di pensare.

Inoltre coloro che, come il protagonista, tentano di disubbidire alle regole del partito non vengono semplicemente uccisi ma fatti scomparire e rieducati, poiché con la semplice morte non solo potrebbero divenir martiri ma soprattutto significherebbe una sconfitta per il partito, infatti il Grande fratello non vuole solamente che i componenti del partito mostrino obbedienza alle sue regole, ma desidera che essi credano ciecamente in lui come si crede in un dio.

Infine l’aspetto secondo me più interessante è quello della guerra come strumento per il mantenimento del potere. Infatti le tre grandi potenze del mondo di 1984 si trovano in guerra perenne poiché in questo modo si riesce a mantenere la disciplina interna, in quanto le esigenze di produzione bellica non permettono l'aumento della produzione per il consumo, e quindi il miglioramento delle condizioni di vita della popolazione il quale è uno dei fattori più forti di destabililizzazione del potere. I gruppi che non devono preoccuparsi della propria sopravvivenza materiale, solitamente chiedono la partecipazione alla gestione del potere. Ecco perché la guerra è una condizione permanente per la dittatura orwelliana. Con questa nuova definizione la guerra non ha più il significato che aveva precedentemente, essa diviene uno strumento del governo per il mantenimento del proprio potere; non è neanche importante che la guerra esista veramente, l’importante è che la popolazione ci creda e quindi possa “perdonare” allo stato la propria condizione di disagio, che probabilmente non riuscirà nemmeno più a esprimere tra qualche generazione, a causa dell’introduzione della newspeak, e che non ricorderà mai per colpa del doublethink e della cancellazione del passato.

Insomma sembra che il partito abbia tutte le capacità per dominare per sempre, nessuno sembra potersi opporre, a parte quel 85% di popolazione costituita dai proles, i quali come scrive Winston nel suo diario: “Fino a che non diventeranno coscienti del loro potere, non saranno mai capaci di ribellarsi, e fino a che non si saranno liberati, non diventeranno mai coscienti del loro potere”. Forse Orwell vuole farci capire che, forse non è vero che due più due può fare tre o cinque, forse il gf non è un dio, forse la guerra non è perenne, forse i proles possono riconquistare la loro libertà di uomini, forse non è tutto perduto.
